I am black and l live in San Diego. l love the beach and wanna learn how to surf but l can not understand why black people have never gotten into surfing. We do not go snowboarding or ice skating either. l just wanna know what has caused this crazy cultural thinking.

Yes black people do! You just do not know any that do lol. my friend petey, who is black does all those things. he is an incredible snowboarder.

l did not know this and l do not know if it is even true, but l have heard that a LOT of black people do not know how to swim. Maybe that is because there are not a lot of pools in the inner city?

That sounds stupid to me because not every black person is from the ''inner city'' and obviously anybody can swim if they learn, so l really do not know why black people do not surf.

l am white and l do not know how to surf either.

its just an image that people tend to conform to. its like out of all my white friends, only 2 or three enjoy hip hop or rap. its fine to break the mold. l Encourage You!

So begin the getting into surfing! Go for it! l have no clue of why. Never thought about it but you do have a point, I've never heard of any black people who surf, snowboard, or ice skate.

l mean i'm sure there r plenty of black people that do snowboard & surf & all that.but.. l dunno! One of my ex-boyfriends is black & he was into snowboarding.but he was also crazy.

Why do not u ask ur family members ''would u ever want to go surfing? if not, then why?'' i'm mexican so l have no idea what the answer to this question is.haha

l think we r all victims [if u will] of the expectations put upon us because of our age, sex & race. And those expectations r passed down to us from one generation to the next. And we rarely ever question those expectations. Crazy cultural thinking? You got that right. It is crazy - because it is based on nothing more than our own unwillingness to question things. l dated a black girl for a few years [ l am white] & SHE always questioned [semi-jokingly] if she was 'really black' because she had no rhythm at all. l used to kid her about it - because it was silly. Just like it is silly for someone to NOT surf because of the colour of their skin.

l guess it is just the old anglo-saxon tradition of going to beaches on hot summer days that comes to mind. Until the 1960's, black people were not even aloud on the beach in Australia! Even though it is very different now of course, white people r just known to hang around the beach whenever it is hot. Also the availability/closeness to the beach is just closer for white people since most of the population dream of that ''beach lifestyle'' where the old rich people retire in their multi million dollar condo's.
This is all just my interpretation of beach culture, l certainly do not choose to believe in those generalisations!

In the world however if u count Indonesians, Polynesians, Maldivians & Africans ''black u will be suprised at how many black people surf! A whole surf industry has evolved in Bali with alot of hot young professionals coming from there. Plenty of African surfers r coming from South Africa from Durban to Jeffreys Bay. l do not think l will need to go into much detail about the Polynesian surfers, do l (Hawaii, the roots of surfing!).

Anyway enough of the proof. The only way you're going to change this cultural thinking is if u will learn how to surf. The ocean is for everyone, & black people r sure as hell aloud to be apart of surfing! Invite some of ur mates, find someone to give u lessons & u wo not regret it.

They do,Aboriginals,Maoris,Balinese,Brazilians,Samoans,South Africans and Hawaiians surf. l am sure some African Americans would surf too.

l personally do not have any cultural thinking about whether or not black people surf. l have lived in San Clemente (OC) & recently moved to La Jolla (SD) to attend UCSD, & l just do not see many black people surfing either. Also the black people that l do see surfing r not very advanced. l do not think it has anything to do with race. If u like surfing just do it. At first it was intimidating, because l was the only Asian in San Clemente who was surfing in the group of white kids. However, l learned that it does not matter what race u are. If u r good at surfing u will earn the respect of the people in the lineup with ur skills.

The cool ones who are individuals and not controlled by society, cultural norms, and their peers do. Go for it regardless of what anyone thinks or says, your making the choice and putting in the effort, not them.

They do, there is even a Black Surfing Association. Based in LA somewhere. l am too lazy to google it though.

l know a lot of Blacks that l know, do not even go to the beach or know how to swim.

l think it is the black people in Chicago that do not surf. l mean, have u ever considered what would happen to u if u tried surfing on Lake Michigan? Your toes would froze!

Awwright, cultural time. Who says u have to hang out with black folks to go surfing? Are u scared of white folks? That attitude goes back to slave times & post-Confederacy, when black folks & white folks would not dare to look at each other. I'd invite u to go surfing with me, except for a few problems: (1) l do not live close to the ocean. (2) Even if l did, it is cold here, far from San Diego. (3) l do not surf, even though l am white. (4) l can not swim & am deathly afraid of drowning.

they do. just not many of them. of the ones that l do know that bodyboard, surf, or snowboard---none of them suck.
