l have just gotten my doctors degree in Optometry and have gotten a my dream job in coco beach, Florida!! ever since l was a kid l have wanna learn how to surf and never had the time to learn. then when l was 11 my parents moved me away from the beach. l really just wanted to know from all the surfers out there is 25 years old to old to start surfing.

hell no. out here in california they have senior surfing clubs that offer lessons to all seniors. kawabunga dude go for it.

You r never too old. l personally know a grandmother in Cocoa Beach in her late 50s who only learned to surf about 2 years ago. She surfs all the time now & even recently won a major tandem event in Hawaii. l would guess that more then 40% of the students taking lessons at my surf school last year were females ur age or older.

You might want to contact Melody DeCarlo about taking a lesson. She is a nurse working at the hospital there & gives lessons all the time. She is also a senior level certified NSSIA instructor. You can find her email address under certified instructors on the NSSIA.org web site.

No! There is no age limit on surfing. My son-in-law started at around ur age, & has done fine. Surfing is an ocean sport, & should only be practiced by confident & competent ocean swimmers. Master ur ocean skills, & the be sure to start out with good professional lessons. There r already way too many dangerous people in the water, who think they can surf, do not join their ranks.

Take my advice, look up the instructor HB Snake recommended. He has some great contacts in the world of surfing lessons/schools. l have been at it for 42 years, & l hope u take the time to learn the right way, & have as much fun as l have had.

There is no limit to when you can start surfing. l did not really get into until my mid-30s. You're in a good place to learn with lots of surf camps and schools there. There is a group of women longboarders who surf the north side of the Cocoa Pier a lot, they could be a good connection for you.

l do not think age is the best way to figure out if u can surf or not. I've seen some guys out in the lineup that r at least 55 years old shredding it. You can also say that there r kids that r 18 years old & incredibly out of shape left on autopilot in front of a computer screen with a XBox controller glued to their hands.

It boils down to ur physical fitness. As with all sports, it is important u r limber & free from any serious body problems like a bad back. l suggest to at least be able to hold ur breath for 20-30 seconds, as u may be submerged in the water & will have to be able to hold ur breath long enough to come back up. Considering you're a beginner, u will probably be lugging around a nice longboard or foam beginner longboard (i.e. BIC). Be sure that this is not a problem.

If everything is a go, find yourself a good instructor. If not, u can do simply read online surfing tutorials on sites such as surfing-waves.com & expertvillage.com to teach yourself. I'd recommend getting taught by someone, as they can critique u as u learn.

So l say go for it! Just make sure to buy yourself a nice wetsuit, rent or buy a nice foamie board, & rip those waves! Goodluck.

No you're not too old. What better time to learn now that u DO live close to the beach. You only advance in surfing if u go consistently, & live close to the beach anyways. There r surfers that say they surfed 20 years, but each year they may only surf 5 times in the summer. So if u surf 5 years, & go everyday u will be so much better than the 20 year old dude that tries to bring his experience into the equation. You will earn the respect of the people in the lineup with ur skills not through race or experience.
