Okay so for my birthday (april) l asked if my parents would buy me a surf board and they agreed. However, i'd like to do some research because l know they are expensive. So can you give me like guidlines or even a web site or something on buying a board? thanks :)

You should just go to your local surf shop and talk with the guys there. They will be experienced and know what kind of board that will best suit you. Im assuming your a beginner so a good way to go would to get a long board. They are a little pricier then short boards but you can more than likely find a good used one for a decent price. l would just say do not buy a board online, its just not a good idea.

Good luck

Before u even think about buying a surfboard, get some lessons. John F will give u advice before starting to surf, listen to it. While it is possible to learn on ur own, u will be getting nowhere for an extremely long time. Get some lessons or ask one of ur buddies to help u out/lend u a board. Surfing is not as easy at it looks.

Once u think you're progressing; ie. Riding the unbroken part of the wave, getting up quickly, reading the surf, go to a surf shop & they can help u suss out what the best board will be for you. If u want to progress to a shorter board, they will probably guide u to something around a foot taller than ur actual height with plenty of width & thickness. Of course if u were having enough fun on ur learning board, u might want to buy a mal (do not buy a mini mal; in my opinion, they're completely useless (debates, anyone?!). You might as well get a shortboard outline the same length. You will be getting the same paddle power as a mini mal with probably twice the manouverability. Plus when u get better, u will be able to use this as ur big wave board.) Be sure to discuss everything you're after with the surf shop guy.

Have fun!

Welcome to surfing! If ur parents do not surf, they should certainly have some surfing adult with u before u spend a nickle. Or, at least u should really wait until u have had the adavntage of some professional lessons. Surfing is an ocean sport, & should only be practiced by persons who r already confident & competent ocean swimmers. So get familair with the ocean before u start to surf. There r already way too many dangerous people out there, who think they can surf, so do not join there ranks.

l suggest u go to some good local surf shops. Get some lessons, private lessons or group lessons, or a 'surf camp' The instructor will rent u a board to learn on. After u master the basics, rent boards, or borrow them, until u decide u want to keep on surfing. A surfboard is a big investment. Do not waste ur money on something that will disappoint you.

This question comes up a lot on YA Surfing, & it is impossible to answer it accurately on-line. Although l am sure u will get lots of ''advice'' the real BEST ANSWER is to go to a good local surf shop & discuss ur skill level, ur size & local wave conditions with the folks there. they will give u much better info than ANYBODY out here in cyberspace. You should really think about buying a decent board, & avoiding popouts , & boards made in sweat shops in China, unless that is just all u can afford. And do not forget, there r always used boards for sale in every surf shop.

After 42 years of surfing, l still get my surfboard buying advice at good local shops in the places where l surf.

And, l know there r lots of nice kids who want to share information with u on line. But do not take the advice of other teenagers, who may know even less than u do about surfing. Kevin & Yo Mutha r speaking the truth. Let ur folks help, a surfboard is a big investment.

Good luck, & remember, surfing is FUN.

Craigslist, and l recommend spending less than $200. You can get a good board for a good price. Plus, when you realize it is a difficult sport and requires a lot of time and dedication, you can probably sell the board back on Craigslist for roughly the same price you paid.

If you live in southern california like San Diego, my hometown, you can get a soft board at costco that is perfect for beginners. Plus it is only $99!!!!!! That is your best bet.

Lucky you. Best bet is to always to go to your local surf shop. They will be able to provide you with the best advice as far as what will work best for your location and ability level. Avoid buying any surfboards on line, They tend to be cheap ass boards made in factories by people who do not even surf.

your gonna wreck your first one so do not go spending big. check the want ads or local fishwrap for a decent floater. get a leash or not, swimming in everytime you fall is a good incentive to do it right but is kinda hazardous to others. happy b-day

The best way is to have friends who surf and have a bunch of different surf boards. You try them at the place you will normally surf. Then again, l was raise in Hawaii.
