Black boards look exactly like seals to whales and sharks.you got it figured out now? maybe time for a new board.

Edit. John is input seems logical , but it is completely incorrect , plus he surfs on the east coast lol. that is like a guy that thinks he plays real Hockey because he plays floor hockey.

Its a naturalin instinct for sharks and even crocodiles(salt water species) can mistake the surf board for a seal or large fish. The wet suit colour as well as your arms paddling can be mistaken for the fins of the animal.

l reccomend you get a bight coloured board and wet suit.

Sharks and black attracts the sun which will melt your wax job.

It has nothing to do with sharks. Swim underneath a surfer on a white board & look up, the board is silhouetted in the light from above. A dark blue board or a white board or a red board looks pretty much the same, too. If the shark theory were correct, they would stopped making black wetsuits twenty years ago. That is not to say that some sharks do not mistake surfers or wet suit clad swimmers for seals or sea turtles. They do, particularly in areas where sharks normally prey on seals & sea turtles, regardless of the surfboard color.

The answer is purely aesthetics. Does it look good? When u see 'white ' surfboards, u r generally looking at boards that have not been colored, either by resin tint or airbrushing in the assembly process. That usually costs less, & is the most common. l have three red boards among others, because l like the color. l have seen camouflage surfboards, & a surfboard painted in black & gray strips like a tiger shark.

because the board will get to hot and the wax will melt off

a few reasons.

first, when u r paddling around on a dark board, u look like a seal to sharks. there for, a hungry shark might have found an easy meal which looks like a seal. but dont worry thats not going to happen

second, most people say that the wax will melt because black attracts heat. so u constantly have to keep waxing it.

third, if u r out in the water for a long time on a sunny day, ur board will get really hot cause the black attracts heat

attracts heat and thus melts wax. its also not that good if you lose your board. Its better to have a color that you can spot. There are carbonfiber boards that are ultra lite and are hollow. If this is you board than its alright.

seems like most people here are superstitious about shark attacks and how boards look like seals lol. In florida when someone gets attacked by a shark its usually unprovoked and l can almost guarantee you a florida shark has no idea what the hell a seal is lol.

Black board whiteboard who cares? Maybe people do not have black surfboards because there are not eye-candy? StellenStoke sounds like he knows what he is talking about tho..

l asked my shaper that question a few years ago, it has something to do with the heat or light or something--stellen.sounds about right with what he said.

homer.--who are you to talk down about the east coast and its surfers?
are the waves at your break firing everyday? no.
can you out-surf this eastcoaster? again, no.
why not just have a good time in the water and stopping talking crap about people and places you dont know much about.

black boards get a hot. This cause several problems: your wax melts off, it can cause delaminations from expanding gas inside the board, it can burn you, no seriously it can. This is also why you do not see very many board with things like pearlized or metallic paint jobs, they absoro too much heat.

As long as you keep your board out of the sun, like in a white day bag, when you are not riding it you should be okay.

The main reason why surfboards arent black is because sharks eyes instantly see black because there brain senses the colour as food, and thinks it might be a seal

The Second reason is because the colour black absorbs heat, and if your surfboard is absorbing heat what do you think will happen to it ?
