Longboards or Shortboards?
WOW! Thanks guys! l was not expecting so many people to come out with insightful and helpful ! Usually when l post a question on here l get the one word ''your an idiot'' typefrom people who expect everyone to know what they know. Thanks again for all the help, l will definitely keep you're advice in mind when l start hitting those waves!

P.s. Is 20 too late to start surfing? l am not expecting to become a pro or anything, but l do not wanna be too far behind the learning curve and make a fool out of myself :)

definetly the long boards. it is possible to learn on shortboards but they will take much longer to learn on and it takes much more effort. longboards are much easier to learn on but you might want to try a fun board

Longboards for sure, they offer stability and are very easy to catch waves on.

longboards without a doubt. You dont want to be using a shortboard really until u r an intemediate or better. The extra length, width, weight & lack of a rocker make the longboard far more stable, easier to paddle with & easier to catch waves on. However they lack manouverability. When l learnt to surf l used & 8ft minimal & it was perfect because it had all of the above features & was fairly easy to manouvre. l recommend a Bic board to learn on, maybe even a softboard as they r both easier to ride than other boards. Most people learn best on long boards, although l have seen lots of surfers start on a short board & master it. In the long run, there r NO RULES on what type of board u haven to learn on. Long boards r ideal for learners. There r also good internediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals & some hybrids. That is why instructors use long boards or fun boards (or even softtops).

l started surfing in 1966, & everybody rode longboards then, Most of us gradually moved on to short boards during the 'short board revolution', But like l said, there r no rules, & l have seen some energetic young grommets start out on a short board from day one. It is just not the ideal way to do it.

THE REAL BOTTOM LINE IS: Go to a Surf Shop, not a computer. The pros there can give u the right !!

Well l would definitely learn on a longboard they are much more stable in the water and not 20 is most defianately not to late so start surfing it is really fun

longboard....its way more stable and you can ride smaller waves withthem until you get comfortable.
as far as being twenty goes...you will be fine, not to old at all.my uncle sis 34 and he stayed with me for a week and he could stand up on my dads 8'6 by the end of the week.
