Ok.Prior to taking up surfing, l would always just avoid the water when the jellyfish rolled around (in New Jersey that is usually late August when the water warms up a bit).Went in last week and it almost felt like l was not paddling through a liquid -- there were that many jellies!They were absolutely everywhere.But l must really like this sport b/c l went out for about an hour and a half anyway.l was a little apprehensive the first time l had to duck under a wave, but it did not really bother me too much.

But then l saw a really big angry-looking reddish one and l decided that was a bad omen that should end my session.Anyone have any thoughts on the jellies -- which ones sting?when to avoid them? Any good disgusting jellyfish stories (l gotta think it is possible to swallow one)?

well they must be harmless if you were out there for 1 and a half hours and didnt get stung.

the bad jellyfish are normall really small and a are usually by them selvs.

Avoid ones with trailing tentacles. You will see lots of jellys with no visible tentacles, such as moon jellys. They are no big deal. If you do get stung they make this stuff now called Jelly Fish Squish, it deactivates the nematocysts that the jelly leave behind on you to prevent them from firing and causing a sting. You can also wear a long sleeve rash guard to protect yourself, they can not sting through things.

they are probably harmless if you didnt get stung once and there were that many there. l only got stung by a jelly fish once at wrightsville beach, NC and it didnt hurt really. but dont worry, only the really small ones with that are by their self can be harmful. and if you swallow one. you dont wanna know what will happen

l have been surfing in NJ for 42 years, and to be honest, l have only seen a handful of jellyfish this summer, compared to other years. Sounds like you just got a bad day. Listen to Kim_dude, he is right on on this one.

Just keep meat tenderizer with your stuff. Anything but a box jelly or a man of war will just sting and the tenderizer will take care of that. Those two can kill you in the water, but fortunately, there are usually warnings on the beach and on the news.
