l bruised (l think) my ribs about a week ago and although they do not terribly hurt when I am moving around with regular motions, l just realized it hurts like hell to lay on my board. I am leaving for Costa Rica Friday night. What a disaster. I'm, of course, going to try and tough it out. But it could take me out of the water if it is to painful. Does any know of any protection devices l could use in the water? Has anyone been able to surf through a rib injury (l know it is brutal)?

There is nothing mate - l broke my rib on a trip to Indo & l tried EVERYTHING (even hollowing out a little section of the board to make a dip to put less pressure on the rib) - nothing worked. If u use anything to protect ur ribs, u will reduce movement in ur torso, with will severely hamper ur turns (especially top turns). Try taping a little bit or faon to the top of ur board - that is the only thing l did that made even a scrap of difference.

Tough it out though - Costa Rica is sweeeeeeet!

There is a device called the Paddle-Air that helps your back and does take some pressure off your upper ribs. Basically, it puts an air cushion between your chest and the board. l lot of surfers have used these devices, including myself. Another thing you can use is a vest when you surf. l know the water is warm, but at least the vest will help some with your ribs and not overheat you terribly.

the big clambouski thinks you should put lots of calimine losion on your ribs and then let it soak in for 2 hours 37 minute and 12 seconds.

l do not know of anything. I've cracked a rib surfing and l tried to tough it out but when you're hurt, you're hurt. There really is not anything you can do. Just rest before you go.
