l have been teaching myself to surf for about 6 years every summer. l have been using softboards and minimals and now l wanna move on! Last year l started taking out my friends fibreglass mid length board which l was fine with and now l am thinking of buying a board, what would you suggest l look at?
I am 16 and about 5'4.

l would suggest a 6'6 fish. This is a good board for you if you can pop up in a fast fluid motion and can paddle very good. If you surf in small waves. under 4 foot you may want a high performance longboard.

try getting a board like your friends if u say its fine and you can stay up on it or try a fun board

well l dont really know where you live and all but if you want to move on, l suggest you get like a retro fish thats around 6'0 or so. if you want a longboard just get like a 9'0.

We find that locating a good local independent store with a good owner who knows about surfing and the stock he holds is the best way to find out about the board for you.

What conditions do you want to surf? How much experience do you have, how confident are you? How much money hae you got to spend? You need to talk it through as the wrong equipmnt can put you off.

Try thewavehouse.co.uk or .magicseaweed.com

If u r already pretty comfortable with stuff in the funboard class, u could easily make a transition to s short performance board. l do not know what type of break u surf, but fish have become exceedingly popular, & they r very versatile.

Go to a good local surf shop & talk to the surfers there. They know the breaks that u surf at, better than we do. they will help u find the right board for ur size, skill level, local wave conditions & ur budget.

l have been surfing for 42 years, & almost always gotten good advice from the folks at the surf shop, as long as l am honest with them about my skill level & what l want out of a surf board. Good luck!

l would probably go with a 6'6 or a 6'3. The board might feel kinda long for u (6'3 is almost a foot taller than you) but the board is nice & streamline & it is much easier to paddle than, say, a 9'0 or a stand-up paddle board. If ur pop ups r good & u can get up with out using ur knee ( hard to do on a short board) then l would go with a 6'3.

Ask the surfboard provider for one with big rails for good balance & a point nose for going through waves or duck diving. Smaller boards r good for speed & they're easy to cart around, but bigger boards r more fun but a lot heavier & a lot more bulky.

Depends on ur aspect. Good luck though.

Danny
