you do not have to be a certain age. l know surfers that range from ages 4-60.

It can be dangerous, but you should not think about the dangers.

Surfing, l my opinion is the best sport out there. Whenever l just want to get away from people, and have alone time, l go surfing at a nice quiet spot.

If you have a board, and potential, then l say you should go for it!

l love to surf, & l am really happy when other people learn to enjoy surfing, too. Surfing is an ocean sport. before u decide to surf, decide to know & understand the ocean. Learn to be at home with its currents, rips, undertows & sometimes BIG waves. l do not just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. l have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued.

So, if u r already a good ocean swimmer, u have a great start. There is no age limit. l know folks who started in theor 40s, & l have five grandchildren who r all at various stages of building up their ocean skills & starting to surf.

My nine year old granddaughter has her own surfboard, her little sister is just getting ready. The younger ones r all working on swimming & boogie boarding.

Lessons r usually the best way to start, unless u have lots of pals who surf who can teach you. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up do not want to drown you), how to paddle & take off on a wave, & how to ride a wave.

l learned how to surf on my own, but that was 42 years ago, & there were a lot fewer people in the water. The line up was not crowded, & older guys & my friends spent time being informal instructors. And aside from that, l had spent years before that swimmming, body surfing & body boarding in the ocean. By 13 or 14 years old, l had years of ocean swimming experience. l spent almost all of my teen years, swimming, sailing, surfing, scuba diving & fishing.

Surfing can be dangerous, so u have to understand the risks involved. Unless u r a good ocean swimmer, the ocean can be very dangerous. And, u can get banged up by ur own surfboard, so u really need some lessons or help to get started. For young folks just starting out, l think that softtops (soft foam surfboards) r the best.

Yes, u should try it! It is great fun, but make sure u r a good enough swimmer first, & then get some lessons & u will have fun for life.
