for a beginner it really does not make a difference you just want about 9-0 thick and wide or a foamy brands are just what the individual likes everybody is different every board is different good luck welcome to the grome club

l learned to surf on the 9'0 board here:

and still have it all these years later because it is a blast to ride in smaller surf.

for beginner & intermediate surfers, l usually recommend funshape or longboards (something around 8-9' & a little wider & thicker). at the surf school l teach at we use soft-top boards, but l never recommend a person buying one. for rentals & lessons they're fine, but they really r only good for picking up the fundamentals; in other words, they're not boards u can ''grow'' with.

Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, u have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows & sometimes big waves. l do not just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. l have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up do not want to drown you), how to paddle & take off on a wave, & how to ride a wave.

Lessons r usually the best way to start, unless u r an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook u up with lessons, & even rent u a board to learn on.

You need a board that floats u well enough to take off (paddle & catch a wave). Although most people start off best on a longboard, l have seen lots of young surfers start right off on a shortboard, & master it in no time. No doubt a longer, more buoyant board is far better for beginners. In '66, l started on a 9'6 but that is what everybody was riding then.
But the real BEST answer is not here, it is in a good local surf shop. The folks there surf on the same waves as u do (or will). They can best recommend a board for the local breaks, that match ur size & skill level.

When l was growin up in North Shore, Oahu. My dad gave me his 9 ft. Honolua surfboard. Since then, l have been purchasing Honolua surfboards all the time. It is a great long board surfboard because it is sturdy, it is comfortable when l paddle out, l they are long lasting. My favorite shortboard brand is Sector 9 or Lost. They make some nice boards for carving and for doing tricks on.

Enjoy
