im 6 feet and im not a bad surfer. l cant do fancy snaps and airs and barrels. l have been surfing for about 1 year. my weight is 105 pounds. im trying to get better to do fancy snaps and airs and barrels. so what kind of board will be right for me to learn?

l would try a shorter lighter board. l like Rusty is but, there are a lot of good brands out there.

It depends what type of waves ur going to be riding. Generally speaking the bigger the waves the bigger the board.

What size board r u riding now?

Because ur still learning & fairly tall l would not recommend a board smaller than 5'11''. A 5'11''-6'2'' should be good for surfing from 0ft to 4ft (over head) & still give u the ability to try airs & cutbacks & things like that. Average dimensions 6'1x1''x2 2/17''.


If ur going to get one custom made (or even if ur not) talk to a shaper, they can give u the best advice on what u need, & do not lie about ur ability because u will end up with a board that only pro is can ride & will end up hating it.

your first short board doe not need to be like kelly slaters get a cheap one and you wont be scared to try new moves and maybe even airs with it!

Okay, we have a few issues here. If u r really six feet tall, & 105 pounds, u r in deep doodoo. Eat some pizza, go to the gym, drink ensure, drink Coronas, anything to put on some beef.
What r u riding now? Before anybody is going to suggest a change (like ''shorter'') they need to know what ur current stick is. What ur step step is, might be very different if ur presently riding a 9'6'' softop than if ur riding a 6'8'' performance board.

And, where do u surf? Big difference in the waves at different breaks. l was on stuff today, that looked ride-able, but had no push. At a different break, l could have been eating that stuff up with my fish.

The BEST ANSWER is not here. It is at a good local surf shop, where guys & girls who ride the same waves u do, can help u pick the right board for u local break(s), ur skill level & (heaven help us) ur weight. l have been surfing for 42 years, & when l want to know something about a board, l go to a surf shop.
