If l was going to buy a surfboard, what length should it be?
Im 5'3''. And how much are most surfboards?
Or just rental ones?
Ive never surfed before. :(
But someone said to get a board that is 6'' taller than you for the right size. Is that true??
And Id rather stay a little closer to the shore at first. xD

It is not really how tall u are,
(unless you're 3 feet)
It is what u want to do with it.
A longboard is best to start
if u want to ride waves; at
least 6'6''. But if u want to
lay up near shore get a
shorter board. l tried like 8
different sizes when l started.
The short boards r cool
for playing with, but for all
day & big I'd definitely say
long.longer the better.
For starters unless u want to
show off, get with some surfers
and there r always boards to
swap & trade. l bought my first
tri-fin from a dude up on Hatteras
island for $20! It was used, but
so? Look around. Ron Jon has
'em for $800 if u just want to
blow big bucks.

Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, u have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows & sometimes big waves. l do not just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. l have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued.

That is what worries me when l read some of these questions. Lots of folks just do not know what they r getting into. The more times inexperienced people screw up, & have to get rescued, the stricter anti surfing ordinances get past, & it makes it tough on the rest of us.

Lessons r usually the best way to start, unless u r an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook u up with lessons, & even rent u a board to learn on.Go to a real surf shop. A real surf shop is not a bathing suit store that sells some surfboards. Just work on ur basics, & after u feel good, think about buying a board, but do not rush into anything.

Take the time time to learn about the ocean. Go swimming, body surfing & body boarding. When u r really comfortable with it, it is time to start surfing. Have fun!
