l really wanna learn how to surf but none of my friends have an extra board or wetsuit and one said he will teach me if l pay. Should l pay a professional(i found a guy at the beach on the internet) to teach me or is surfing something l teach myself?

Do you learn better when you teach yourself something, or when someone else shows you? With something tricky that could possibly be dangerous, you might be better learning from the pro.

Well it depends on what kind of surfing u want to do. l have surfed for what seems like forever. If l am going to compete then l (even though l have surfed forever) will hire a professional to watch me to see what l am doing.too high, too low, out of position..etc. It is funny when u just surf with ur buddies it is easy to lose focus & form. But if l were u & l was just learning how to surf l would buy a 10 ft board & go out & make some new surfing buddies. l would go as much as possible until u can stand up & ride. Then l would hire someone to transistion me to a smaller board. What kind of friends do u have though? They wo not even teach u to surf.you need some new friends. Party on Bro!

l learned how to surf from 2 years of skateboarding and l am pretty good at surfing

The best thing you can do is go to a local surf shop, most of them usually offer lessons. They supply the boards and rashguards, occasionally wetsuits as well. And, when its time to get your first board, they are the best people to help you.

try a surf camp.

but yahh basically you can be taught by a pro

or you can just chill at the beach for a little while and just watch the people out there and kind of pick up with what there doing.

its all up too you and how much money you want to spend.

If u think ur friend is good enough. If they have enough experience, & u feel safe w/ him or her in the water, then go for it. My friend was a lifeguard for more than 4 years in a really tough beach. So l felt really safe w/ him & the rest of the gang that had been surfing for a long time, they were all older than me ofcourse. Probably in their late 20 is & some mid 30's,but dont tell them l said that. They will kill me. l dont suggest teaching yourself, there r certain things that we do wrong, & we cant see ourself doing it.

just get someone to tell you the basics for FREE and then just make sure you paddle out as much as you can. l got surf lessons years ago and they never helped me that much. l learned all the stuff l know on my own just by watching other surfers.
