l live in Hawaii and have been surfing for much of my life. I've been doing it more recently and am aware of how muscle soreness and strain can keep you up. However, there is a mental alertness, that l just can not shake. Every night after l surf l just can not sleep. I've taken Tylenol, had my wife massage my shoulders, tried different foods, herbal tea, nothing seems to work. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and if you found a solution?

My suggestion would be to not surf after say 5pm. It will give ur body time to calm down & relax. Surfing is an andreline based sport & it stimulates the brain to high excess. If u surf in the evening u will not give ur mind time to come down from that natural high that surfing offers you.

Try stopping about 5pm & having a calm evening. Read, watch TV, just something that helps u to lessen the adrenaline in ur body enough for u to get a good nights sleep. Have a bath using lavender oil (not too girly as a scent)The massage is an excellent calmer, as is the herbal tea..try camomile if u have not already.Have the massage about 8pm to 9pm & then just read in bed for a while. It should help.

l know what its like. l do not surf but l do have an active brain. It does not stop me sleeping most time, but sometimes just doing nothing helps me to calm down enough to sleep.

Good luck

It might just be the adrenaline from doing an extreme sport. Try stopping earlier or getting more sleep.

Bro, u need a Doc. l have been surfing for 42 years, & believe me, l have done lots of other 'high adrenalin' activities (both by choice, & some not so much by choice). l have been up all night, cold, wet, angry, in pain, scared s&%tless & all wired up over the activities of that day & mentally distressed. But a pure athletic endeavor, whether surfing, or distance running (yes l did that once upon a time, about the 30 pounds ago) never kept me up all night. l know Docs. r expensive, & if u do not have health insurance, it is a drag, but u may have some serious problem, that could end up keeping u out of the water for life. Do not trust ur health to the c%*p u will get from all of us on line. Good luck.
