just practice doing it on the floor..lie on your stomach and push ur self into a sideways position on your feet. you need strenth and speed really for this :)

Unless you are an expert surfer, you do not really need to do much of a pop-up. As a beginner you can basically just stand up. You do not need to be able to do it quickly or anything unless you are surfing fast or high waves, which you definitely should not do while learning anyway.

u can practice on the floor. l usually put a strip of tape on the floor that represents the middle of my board, lie down, l even ''paddle'' a few strokes, then place my hands on the floor a little more than shoulder width apart(or as wide as ur board) & quickly pop-up. try to do it in one fluid motion, from lying down to ur feet, landing sideways, hitting the tape in the middle of ur feet. try not to use ur knees in getting up at all. it takes a lot of practice. l only get to surf a few times a year so l usually do 20 pop-ups a day starting about 2 weeks before, working up to about 50/day. also think about once u r up, keeping ur eyes up, looking where u want to go, & ur knees bent. l always say ''stay low, like j-lo'' l do not know, l just said it once & it helps me remember to not stand up too straight. my boyfriend has surfed for 30+ years & that is how he taught me.hope it helps..HAVE FUN & GOOD LUCK!!!:)
