Do u mean how do u paddle past breaking waves to get to where u can catch them??? On a short board, u duck dive by pushing the front of ur board down right before the wave gets to you, then pulling ur body under with the board.

On a long board whatever u do, do not just let ur board go & dive under the wave. u can turtle. flipping the board over so the fins r facing up & hug ur board from beneath it. l have trouble with that in bigger surf though.

To the person below me, yeah it is an American term. l live in California & that is the only thing I've ever heard people call it. Does not really make sense though.. l do not think turtles flip over to get under waves haha.

Hey Anna, l never heard the roll called a turtle :+) l thought it was called an eskimo roll (because kayaks do that sort of roll)
anyway, times change and I'd better keep up. Is it an American term?
