I've have never been surfing but i'm going this week end will any one give me some pointers on what to do?Some people told me that l needed wax but what is that for?Please try to explane this to me.Try to anwser as soon as possible because I am going to be gone this weekend.

when u go surfing, l am assuming you're hiring boards?? & will u have a surf instructor?

basically, u wax ur board to get grip so when u stand on the board, u dont fall off. however, if u r a complete beginner, u will probably be using a foamie (a surfboard that is made out of foam - very useful to learn the basics & it does not hurt if it hits you). so, l really do not think u need wax, but then again, this depends if u r using an actual surfboard or not. if u have a surf instructor, he/she will explain it to you.

If u r taking a lesson at a surf school, u do not need to bring anything but yourself, ur swimsuit, & a towel. Any quality school will have everything ready. They will probably also show u how to wax ur board. If u r going with someone experienced, it is a good idea to bring surf wax (cold water or warm water) depending on where u live. If u r going on ur own & renting a board, good luck & try not th hurt yourself or someone else. Rent a longboard at least 9' & stay out of the main lineup or where it is crowded. The safest way to learn the proper techniques & surf etiquette is to take a lesson.

Step 1:
Select the right equipment when u try to teach yourself how to surf. This means selecting a board that is right for ur skill level & body size. In addition, u will need to buy a leash, so u that wo not lose ur board in the water & some wax to rub on ur board, so ur feet wo not slip. You also need a wetsuit, so u wo not get too cold waiting for the perfect wave to come along.

Step 2:
Pick a location where the waves break closely to shore, & the water is not too deep. You also may want to pick a day where the waves r not too big, & the water is not too choppy. Choose an area that is not crowded with other surfers.

Step 3:
Push ur board out into the water until u r waist-deep, just beyond where the waves r breaking on shore. Sit up on ur board & practice riding the waves into the shore without standing up. Do this until u feel comfortable with the way ur board handles, & how ur body affects its movement.

Step 4:
Practice how to maneuver ur board around the waves as u teach yourself to surf. This means knowing how to duckdive, which is lowering the front of ur board, along with ur head, to go underneath a wave as it passes. In addition, u will need to practice spinning ur board to face the shore as the right wave approaches.

Step 5:
Stand up. This may sound simple, but it is actually the hardest part of learning how to surf. The trick is to stand & place both ur feet on the board at the same time, in the right position, so that u will not lose ur balance & fall into the water.

Step 6:
Repeat the standing procedure over & over until u can do it without falling over. Once u have mastered ur balance, u can start to ride the waves & learn how to steer the surfboard by shifting ur balance.

Since u obviously have never surfed before, hook up with a good surf shop for some lessons & a rental board.
If u r not really at home in the ocean, surfing requires a lot of time just learning how to be safe & confident in the ocean It is no place for the uninitiated. Lessons r the key.Go to a real surf shop, not a bathing suit store that sells some surfboards. They will rent u a waxed board & give u all u need to know with ur lessons. But do not expect to be a 'surfer' after one day.
Also, please do not think that it is cool to just show up on the Beach with a rented board & dash into the water & be a ''surfer.'' Take some time to learn what u r doing, or stay in the hotel bar.
