I am a beginner surfer, I've been out about five or six times but keep getting my butt kicked and l know its because the waves are too big and rough for my skill level.l was just wondering where some good surf spots for beginners are in Southern California that have preferrable smooth rolling waves, as opposed to the big rough ones I've been trying.

l cannot name a specific break, but try a beach where there is a lot of white water and broken waves as there will be few advanced surfers in these areas. or, try going to a surf school. most schools will take you to a beginner location with waves and conditions that will allow you to learn the basics and pick up on the techniques more quickly.

Dallas, Texas. Kansas. Detroit, Michigan. Are all great spots, but in SoCal you want to check out- Compton, Inglewood, Crenshaw, all South Central. Long Beach and the Bu are all swell places if you want to hang 10.

Oceanside has several beaches that have a small break that is good to learn on.. The pier, Wisconsin St., Cassidy St. and if you can get on the base Camp Del Mar beach is perfect for learning.
In L.A. county there is Long Beach at Belmont , Seal Beach at the pier and breakwall
Really any spot that breaks is a good place to learn. You have to get use to working with what you've got for waves because they are seldom the same over and over

if u r just starting, DO NOT go anywhere 2 big, like: Hunnington, tressels, avalanche at the bay, the point at the bay and the cove, santa barbara by the college
Go to some small places like: middles at the bay, the cove (in a month-when it dies down), rat beach, torance beach,

if you are a beginner l would recommend san onofre. the waves there are super slow and they rarely get above 4 feet. if you go there make sure you bring a board that is a t least 8 feet long or you wont catch anything. the other cool thing about sano is that if you get bored you can walk to trestles which is bigger and gnarlier.

l recommend u before ridin' waves go on to abc7.com click on weather then surf report check out the waves it is not exact always but pretty much it is as close as u can get.
Some places l 've like r Manhattan also the sand is not grainyt at all it is smooth & rarely any rocks ..The beach l experienced rough sand & rocks where Seal Beach & Doheny State Beach in Dana Point.
Manhattan Beach is pretty cool & l see lots of beginners there too. l think every beach has rough & smooth waves from time to time & also mushy waves ya know the ones that break easily they do not hold up as much.
Good luck & l hope u visit Manhattan!
