So, l live in San Francisco California, and l was considering taking up surfing this summer. Does anyone know of good spots to catch beginner waves, as well as about how much l can expect to spend by purchasing a used board and wetsuit? Do l even need a wetsuit in summer Nor Cal waters?

l really do not wanna drop too much money on this, as I am really only using it as a means to keep fit during the off-season for snowboarding... in the hopes that l can garner a love for something that does not require a proximity to the mountain. Does anyone have ideas?

just get a boat. a boat is a much better mode of travel than a surfboard.

l live in southern California so l do not know of any good beginner waves in San Fransisco. But l know that u might wanna start out with buying a soft top long board around 8 feet long. u can buy those brand new for around $350-$450 at sport chalet. Doyle is usually the starter board that they sell there. And a wetsuit is probably necessary for the summer, the water in nor cal can get pretty cold. u can buy one used for about $100 bucks, but make sure to wash it out good because people often pee in them. however if u wanna buy one new for not much more it would be better & last longer. A new wetsuit will cost about $180-$250 bucks. & u may also wanna get a rash guard so that ur stomach dosent get a rash. well l hope this helps. Enjoy the surf.

near san francisco, try ocean is beach. take lessons at a surf school if possible. they're usually like $60 or so for a 2 hour group lesson.
i live in santa cruz, & cowell is beach is a great place for learning & longboarding. probably rent equipment at first especially if you're not sure u want to continue surfing. yes u will need a wetsuit even in summer. l have a 4/3 that l use in both winter & summer.
if u really want to buy equipment, try craigslist. o'neill also makes the best wetsuits.
