It is not really stomping, more like hopping. Short boards have lots of drag which slows them down in small or slow surf. Hopping pumps water through the fins lessing the drag and generating speed. You can accomplish the same by making sharp little s-turns.

makes u look stupid..

pumping the waves lets u feed off the waves energy to build ur speed. but do it without doing all the hopping that actually creates too much downforce which hurts more than helps.

to generate speed u need to be able to put as much surface of ur board to water as possible. do this riding up the face & down (youll speed going down) . AND do this while maintaining a fairly straight line without any drastic turns & u feel the wave push u faster & faster.

its hard to explain . hard to learn.. but rewarding man

.plus u wont look like a kook.

it basically keeps u on the wave

it can do a few different things depending on where on the wave u ''stomp''. u really shouldnt stomp since all u will do is ding ur board, rather u should pump. if ur having a hard time getting ur board to drop in sometimes a good pump can be that little extra u need to start ur drop, also in mushier sections it helps keep ur board going because it is basically lifting ur board off the water over & over again. pumping the face of the wave is also a really good way to gain speed down the line. this pump should be much more fluid than one trying to drop in or keep going. it should make ur board mimic teh motion of a fishes tail. by continually pushing on ur board u r making water move over the fins faster which drives u forward like a swimming tuna. pumping to stay going & as a last ditch effort to drop r pretty easy to get the hang of. getting speed down the line is a little harder since u need to get a good rhythm going & know just how hard to pump. a good cross training excercise is pumping a longboard skateboard on land. first get a little speed through kicking then pump the board back & forth to keep it going. make sure to actually push against the board when turning, not just leaning. its kinda hard to describe but eventualy u will get the feeling & be able to ride for miles without touching the asphalt & transfer ur skills to the water to take ur surfing to the next level. good luck.
