When is a wetsuit necessary when going into the ocean this time of year? ?

If the air temp is around 72-75 degrees but the ocean is 65-70 degrees, is a short suit recommended for body boarding?Thanks for any info.

Water temp less than 70 is pretty chilly. l am a SCUBA diver and would be wearing a 3/2 john & jacket with a hood. For surfing, a 3mil full wetsuit should do it; the idea in your case is to *not* be in the water. A shorty may be a little cold.

For me, those water temperatures r board shorts & a rash guard.That what it is locally, & if l can get a chance to go surfing this weekend, that is just what l will be wearing. If it is a little windy out, l might wear my wetsuit vest, but that is it.

l read so many on line here, where people seem to have a rubber fetish, & always want to be covered up in neoprene. The idea of a wetsuit is twofold: one to prevent u from becoming hypothermic (a dangerous situation), & two, to be comfortable enough to surf.

You should wear whatever wetsuit is appropriate for YOU to meet those requirements. Even as l wimp out in my old age, l am inclined to think that u should be fine in a 3/2 spring suit. Why not stop in ur local surf shop, & ask what most of the others surfers (or spongers, as the case may be) r wearing. The consensus opinion is usually the right one for ur area. Have fun!

l kinda all depends on if you get cold easily or not. but yeah a short suit is fine for those temps. but if you can l would get a full suit.

A wetsuit w/ short legs and short sleeves would be plenty. 65-70 water is slightly chilly, but fairly warm for around here in SoCal. Below 65 a 2/3mm fullsuit is better.

Yes, but it is a personal choice. l were a long-armed spring when the water is 63-66 degrees. 68-70 is warm and you can trunk it. Any colder and you should have a wetsuit.

3/2,get an ultra flex type,you wont know your wearing it.Best to be warm when you are out there,and do some warm up exercise before you go in.Cramp can be very dangerous.
