I am looking to get a new surf board but I am considering getting a 4 fin instead of a 3 fin this time, but l can not decide. l mean like does it make a huge difference?

If you're a beginner, get the thruster set up (3 fins). They're the most stable set up as well as allowing plenty of drive for improving.

Quad boards are a step up from thrusters and l seriously rate these boards. They're a hell of a lot faster than thrusters and extremely responsive. Not many people like em in bigger waves since there is no centre fin for support, but l reckon they're great for em! l now ride quads 100% of the time and l would not go back.

That is a reasonable question, but u do not give us quite enough information to give u a straight answer. Yo Mutha has some good points, but we do not know how well u surf, or where u surf. These r things u should be discussing with the folks in a good local surf shop. They can have a DIALOGUE with you, that we can not have on line. They can give u a variety of information,that can help u make an informed decision on what to buy.

As for the second part, depending on the overall shape of the board, two versus three fins can be a significant difference, hydro dynamically. But, on the other hand, if u r not much more than a casual, intermediate skill surfer, who surfs lots of inconsistent waves, it may not make all that much difference to ur average ride.

quad fin has speed & good turning capablity, it is mostly for speed though, the good ol' three fin boards though, they're great for turns, decent speed & r much more stable. The quads can be a little shakey at times. Personally l ride a three fin, l used to think quads were great but they're ok, not as good as a three fin though, it also depends on what kind of board u have, if u have a shortboard, trifin if you're on average sized waves, 3ft. & quad if you're on super small like 1ft. & if you're riding a retro fish, quad quad quad. l dont care what size waves & if you're on a longboard, depends on what kind of riding u do, l do high performance so l use tri fin, alot of people like the speed of a quad fin though so they use that. all depends on a preference

3 fins will get u a little better balance
4 fins give u a better turning radius & more speed
there is however a best of both worlds, the new channel islands/al merrick quads have a slot for a center fin, so do many other newer quads
so instead of making this decision, u could actually have both!

however if u dont have that option, l would recommend a three fin if its ur primary board, like ur only board, or if u live in an area with big waves where u dont need any extra speed.
a quad is great to have as a primary board also though, it is mine, but also l feel as though it is usually a better addition

but go for the quads with an extra option of a fifth fin & u can get both, l love mine

go with the single fin. then get a twin. then thruster. then see how far you will need to go.

my analogy is that l see a lot of lifted trucks on the road that never see dirt.
