started on a real surfboard when l was 11, boogie boarded before that since 5.

Surfing is utterly peaceful, physically challenging, and exhiliarting all at the same time. That is why l surf. Scenery ai not bad either !

Hello Portugal. Surfing becomes addictive once you stand up and ride a wave properly, there is no going back to being normal and little chance you will ever stop surfing after that. l was a little kid when l started and now l am a 30 yr. old big kid who still loves to surf as much as possible. I've always wanted to surf in Portugal but l am lucky enough to live in California so l will have to wait on that one.

lol, dudes name is not Portugal, he means greetings from the PLACE of portugal.

To chelsea, thats hott how u described it.

Okay, why do l surf? Because l love the challenge, l LOVE to give it my ALL when l am out there & just CHARGE. l love when l ride one in, pick up my shortboard, & RUN back up the beach to the point. l love improving my skill, l love the brief moments of serenity u get when the crowd thin & u do not have to worry about someone dropping in on you, getting in ur way, or competing for waves, l LOVE that competitiveness (not for waves though).

l start at 5:30AM in the morning, but u must mean when did l start. A couple years ago.

l started swimming in the ocean & back bays when l was around 6 years old. By ten or eleven l was body boarding (we did not have 'boogie boards' way back then), l started surfing at 14. That was in 1966, & l am still surfing.

l surf because it is a wonderful way to be as one with the ocean. l swim, & snorkel & used to sail ( l do not have a sailboat anymore) & l used to scuba dive, until an ear problem stopped that forever. l fish & crab. l do not dislike motor boats, but l do not need one to enjoy the ocean. l live in a city, l go to the sea to avoid exhaust fumes & pollution. There is no activity on earth, other than surfing, that is both exhilarating & peaceful at the same time.

l know u r 17, & have been very interested in surfing in ur questions. Read some of the resolved questions, & learn to 'right way'. Surfing is worth doing right. Surfing is more than anything else, a way of life. But is first & foremost, fun.

surfing is just one of the most fun, calming, relaxing, yet challenging thing u can do. surfing was made out of pure recreation in ancient hawaii, meaning it is purely for fun. Most people just ride for the fun & thrill of racing down the face of a wave & that having a big fat barrel engulf u & shoot u out with the spray. once u ride a wave, its hard to turn ur backon the ocean & walk away from surfing. also, it is a very social experience. when l go surfing, l always go with friends & even when we r all siiting out there in the middle of a lull(Period of no waves), its still fun because we r all just ou there joking around & having fun. Even when l went down to costa rica to surf, l had never been there before, but l got to know a few madd chill guys when l was out surfing with them. We even ended up chilling out side the break & they showed me around a nice small village in CR. And for ur second question, any time is a good time to start surfing. When l was down in costa rica l met a 65 year old man who was having a blast with his 4 year old grandson. it was both their first time surfing.
just go out on whatever board u can find, & have some fun.

cos l have always been a water baby, grew up 10 mins drive from the beach (or 1/2 hr walk with my board!), did swimming squad when l was younger (& until l was about 18-19) so i've always been a strong swimmer & so l was able to surf, l was taught by my older brother is girlfriend when l was younger, & l was hooked ever since, l ended up getting my bronze medallion at my local surf club (was awesome, loved surfclub), & l also did surfing for sport during high school too, i've always loved it, its so calming but also fun at the same time, when the surf is a bit big, u get such a rush when u can catch waves, although its a bit of a rush when its so big that you're swimming or paddling for ur life!! hehehe, its just a great sport & awesome for getting fit, u can start anytime really, on either a boogie board (which is also fun, l do both) or a surfboard, whatever ur comfy with. :-)

l cant even remember when l started. pretty young though.
why do l surf? as i'm sure alot of people on this forum can relate with---when you live in an area driven by surfing and beach culture, its just what you do.

It is one of the only sports that demands ur full focus on whats happening. Started at about 12, went with a bunch of friends, really early in morning. Surf was about 2-3, l had this Styrofoam body board, caught the shoulder of a wave drop in, bottom turned & rode it for about 20yards on the face of the wave. That was it l was hooked. Now at 46 l still surf at least 3 to 4 times a week if there is waves. Not only is it a great work out, it really clears the mind of day to day things. When u paddle for a wave & r just about to get up, ur mind is not thinking about when rent is due or bills that need to be paid, or what l am l going to this Friday night. It is just focused on the task at hand surfing this wave to the best of my ability & not wiping out. With the amount of multitasking we do now a days, surfing is great therapy for the mind body & soul. GETWET
