Well, u r lucky moving to Hawaii. Surfing is more than just buying a board & going & a trying to figure it out all by yourself. Especially in Hawaii, where there r so very many people who want to surf, & just end up making the local surfers angry.Surfing is an ocean sport, that should only be practiced by people who r competent ocean swimmers. Lessons r a must, from either a professional instructor, or from pals who surf. There r way too many dangerous people in the water, who think they know how to surf. Do not join their ranks. Start the 'right way''.

Take lessons. The instructor will rent u a board to learn on. After u master the basics, rent boards, or borrow them, until u decide u want to keep on surfing. While most beginners learn more quickly on longboards, there r NO RULES, & l have seen some beginners start on a short board & master it in no time. A surfboard is a big investment. Do not waste ur money on something that will disappoint you.

What is the best size/type of board? This question comes up a lot on YA Surfing, & it is impossible to answer it accurately on-line. Although l am sure u will get lots of ''advice'' the real BEST ANSWER is to go to a good local surf shop & discuss ur skill level, ur size & local wave conditions with the folks there. they will give u much better info than ANYBODY out here in cyberspace. If u do decide to buy a board, avoid popouts , & boards made in sweat shops in China, unless that is just all u can afford. And do not forget, there r always used boards for sale in every surf shop. After 42 years of surfing, l still get my surfboard buying advice at good local shops in the places where l surf.

Boards made in far eastern sweats shops:

l wish l could move to Hawaii. For you l would say get a long board about 9'2'' to 9'8 or a fun board about 7'10'' to 8'4''. You should also first figure out what kind of waves you will be riding this will help you decide which board to get.
