i'm going surfing tomorow for the whole day..its my second time and i'm buying my board tomorow, can anyone give some advice on what to do or even what kind of board would be best...im getting a shortboard but l want a second opinion

if your new to surfing i'd advise getting a longboard or a medium size board cause you wo not be able to catch anything on a short board. well you may be able to catch some waves but its rare for a surfer to start on a short board and get good at it.

as far as advice for surfing just keep practicing. you will get it.

Do not buy a shortboard to learn on. Go to a local surf shop and they will help you buy the right board. Also remember to just have fun.

There are all kinds of boards and the best thing you can do is go to your local surf shop and ask them.

try to find a shop where you try before you buy. failing that hook up with a surf school who will advise you on which type of board is best suited to your size and ability.

Anybody who starts to surf without lessons is not very sensible. l started 42 years ago, when there was no such thing as lessons. l learned the hard way, & sometimes with advice from some older guys who had been surfing for a while. But l had been swimming in the ocean & body boarding since l was a little guy. And it still took me a whole summer to get 'decent,'' but not 'good.'

Before u even think about surfing, u have to understand the ocean, & be completely comfortable swimming in it, with undertows, rips & sometimes BIG waves. My first tip on how to surf is to be at home in the ocean.

Lessons r the BEST way to start, unless u r a young adult or adolescent with surfing pals who can teach u . You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up do not want to drown you), how to paddle & take off on a wave, & how to ride a wave. There r already way too many dangerous people in the water who think that they can surf. They r a danger to themselves & other surfers. Do not join their ranks.

Be careful of what u read here on line. After l found this site, l figured that l could answer a few questions, & spread the 'good news' of surfing.

Most people learn best on long boards, although l have seen lots of surfers start on a short board & master it. In the long run, there r NO RULES on what type of board u have to learn on. A board has to be bouyant enough to float u well enough for u to paddle & take off on a wave. DON'T even THINK about buying a board until u r sure u r really into surfing. .

l have been surfing since l was 14 in 1966, & l get my surfboard buying advice from good local surf shops in the places where l surf. Beginners should not even worry about buying a board. Renting a board (either from the instructor or shop) while taking lessons is the best way to go. And do not be fooled into a buying a surfboard on line. You do not know enough yet, & will only end up disappointed. Once u have mastered the basics, try a couple different types/styles of boards, & then decide what u want to buy. Surfboards r a big investment.

Take the time to go back & read some of the resolved in YA surfing. There is lots of great information in some of the asnwers.

Good luck. Once u try surfing (and learn the 'right way') u will have fun for life.

Paddle like your life depends on it. ( it probably will). Take off, Bottom Turn, Trim up. Hold That line and hope that muffa spits you out Toward the channel. Otherwise like all the others say longer board. 8 foot plus. dont go out in anything above 3 foot. Or it will destroy your confidence. Dont forget your wetsuit, and gloves, boots if you are learning in colder climes Good luck Brah.

Learn the rules of the road before you get out there.

Also, if it is only your second time, there is no way you can hang for a whole day. Bank on about an hour.
