hello,

if u wanna surf shortboards, u should start with a 7.2 or a 7
then depends of ur weight (but l guess at 14 u re not really big)

you should choose a board in epoxy which is strong, so no worries about breaking it.
some good brands to start like NSP or BIC

don t do like most people do choosing a promodel, the boards have a really nice shape but as a beginner u won t enjoy surfing on those boards.

also if u prefer longboarding u should take a 9 foot

make it clear rather u want to start surfing shortboards or longboards, & don t choose a longboard if u want in the future surf with shortboard (6.0 or 6.1)

hope this helps
have fun

l know u do not want to hear ''go to a surf shop''. But that is the right answer. If ur family surfs, someone should have some advice at home too. But, since u r 14, & know it all, u probably wo not listen to it. Roxy makes nice clothes, not decent surfboards. Stop worrying about what ''brands'' to buy. There r lots of great local shapers who crank out suprerb surfboards. The real r in surf shops, & from LOCAL surfers. We do not even know where u live, or what breaks u will be surfing. So, u do not want to hear ''go to a surf shop Okay, so do not give me ''best answer''. What is right, is right, whether it is 'cool' or not.And some of us who read this stuff r adults, who appreciate things like real spelling (LUVS? PLEAZ?)

Most people learn best on long boards, although l have seen lots of surfers start on a short board & master it. In the long run, there r NO RULES on what type of board u have to learn on. Long boards r ideal for learners. There r also good intermediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals & some hybrids. So, as u see there r a lot of choices out there. Your choice of board depends on ur weight (height is fairly irrelevant), skill level, local wave conditions, & of course, what u can afford. Do not waste u money buying something on line. And ''try before u buy'' rent or borrow a couple different types of board, before u spend a lot of money on one that may not suit you, & a surfboard is a big investment.

And do not buy 'China boards'. They r poorly made junk that will disappoint u in the end. That includes NSPs.

THE REAL BOTTOM LINE IS: Go to a Surf Shop, not a computer. The pros there can give u the right !!

Good luck. Once u try surfing (and learn the 'right way') u will have fun for life. l have been surfing since 1966.

First l would recommend getting into shape because surfing uses very specific muscles u may not be using now.

You need to do push-ups & bench presses to build ur chest muscles, (pecs), so u can push yourself up to stand.

Next u need to do pull-ups or lat pull-downs to work the muscles along ur sides, (lats), that u will use to paddle.

A little running will build ur cardio & legs muscles.

Then l would take a couple of lessons to get the basics down.

After that it is just going to take time in the water.

l always recommend that beginners get a longboard, (at least 9' long), as these r the easiest to catch waves with & balance on to stand up.

And finally this site has a great article called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that l think is terrific:

Good luck & have fun!! :-)
