l was on vacation there once and took surfing lessons around waikiki beach. the north shore has better waves though.but probably for the more advanced surfer.the north shore waves knocked me down, taking my swim suit with them lol..btw im talking about oahu

Google one located where you intend to travel to. Where you surf will depend on where you want to go and what instructor you choose.

barbers is a pretty good beach for some waves that are not to big but not tiny. barbers is also known as white plains. some places on north shore are probably to big for beginners and also downtown like ala moana would be to big.

If you are near Waikiki Beach, there are three surf schools all next to each other right on the beach. You need to be a little careful with the coral heads in the water where they teach but there are many instructors right there to assist you.
