Sorry, but it does not work real well. Water temperature is only above 60F or 15C for a short time in the summer. The biggest waves are in the winter when the lake is nearly frozen.

There is a group in Sheboygan that does some surfing with wet suits.

The surf is not great but there are breaks and sometimes even decent waves. l only surfed there one time and it was mostly a wind swell. It was the middle of summer but really cold. The Eastern Surfing Association has a Great Lakes region. Check their web site out for more details.

Yes, you can surf on Lake Michigan. However it is probably more fickle than surfing on the Gulf Coast of Florida, which is pretty bad. That said, there is a pretty hard core group of Great Lake surfers. Check out Step Into Liquid or Unsalted for some good lake surfing.
