I've decided to take a 5-session surfing class through my university. They will take us to Newport Pier, and the equipment is provided.

I am 22. I've never surfed before. l know how to swim...and l love the ocean. l live in So Cal, only 15 min from the beach. Do you think a 5-session lesson would help me to learn the basics and hopefully get me hooked?
Has there ever been any shark sightings in/around Newport Pier?

Yes but it takes practice.

If you have a good instructor ,without a doubt 5 sessions should get you off to a great start!

Yes, you will be able to surf in 5 lessons. Rule of thumb is, with surf lessons, is to pay attention to the latter lessons. Once instructors give the basics on equipment, safety and etiquette, they will be free to teach you their own individual ''surf secrets.'' Take notes on those.

If you love the water, you will love the surf. Good luck!

yeah, you would definetly be able to learn the basics but it will take practice afterwards before you become better. Because it does not happen just like that. It takes time. Hope you have fun!

The objectives of the class is to teach the basics and to get you up to a point where you can catch a wave on your own. Once you know the basics, the more you practice the more you will like it. Blackies at Newport Pier is a little crowded but hopefully you will survive. Just do not part too long and get a ticket. Last fall l got a $45 ticket while l was in front of my car talking to someone.

You should be able to stand after the first or second session. Learning to surf will take a lifetime but it is a fun journey.

About sharks at Zooport? l would not worry - I've been surfing there for over 15 years and have never seen on. San O is a different story tho. :O

Good luck.
