depends on the kind of board
get a large board, and you should be having a great time your 2nd or third time going out.
it is always great fun, just to be out in the ocean anyway.

the fun starts when you learn to ride the face of the wave rather than just riding the wave straight to the shore..
it is not hard it just takes patience and the right conditions.....

it really depends on how you look at it.. if youre on a board that isnt for you and the waves are not for you then youre not going to have alot of fun l mean getting pounded by surf and being held down alot is not ideal fun just dont let the learning process get to you it takes a while and relax

you will know when the wave slows down it dosent seem as fast you can pick you marks and hit them at first thing are just going on to fast for you to react

First of all surfing is fun as soon as you hit the water. But for the best chances of fun for your first time, l would get a longboard and some friends then find a place where the waves are slow and small and where the locals are easy going.

youll have to surf for a long time to be as good as the people around you. but you can still be accepted whe nyou surf. it doesnt take long. l was able to surf consistently my first day when l was 7 on my 8 foot sponger but with you it will probably take about a month to get everything down depending how close you live ot the beach. (the reason it didnt take me long is l live right on the beach in newport)

You should be having fun every time. If you are getting hassled or are having a hard time catching to staying up on waves you may be either riding the wrong board or surfing the wrong spot.
