l personally think it looks pretty easy, but everyone says it is the hardest sport, so l do not understand what makes it so hard? l snowboard, and there are billions of tricks to learn that can be really hard, but surfing they just kind of ride down the wave, so whats so hard about that?

Even though l live by the beach, l do not think l will ever try surfing. l am scared l will get eaten by a shark, or drown.

How can you pass judgment if you have not tried it yourself? Maybe some people do not think that snowboarding is hard.

iv'e been surfing for a while and it is definetly not easy. you have a lot less balance when you are on water then when you are on snow. and when your surfing you have to wait for the perfect wave, you cant hang 10 on just any wave you get it so the wave is crashing down on the end of your board so it will balance out when you go forward. if you have snowboarded for a while it will give you a start but it will still take time to learn

because every ride is different.. unlike snow boarding where u have the same constant surrounding to learn the ''billions'' of tricks to learn, in surfing every wave is different every section changes, either by wind, tides or just the contour of the bottom changes. so learning on something that keeps changing every time u think u have it down makes surfing one of the hardest sports there is.try it IF YOU CAN PULL OFF A ROUND HOUSE CUTTY IN 2 WEEKS, ILL GIVE YOU 50 BUCKS VIA PAY PAL..

Surfing is fun like snowboarding, so both r similar in fun. As far as difficulty goes, with surfing u have to contend with many more variables to learn to ''do'' it. 1) You have to be in quite good condition to be able to paddle out through the waves. If u r not in condition, u wo not even be able to get to the lineup unless u r satisfied catching white water. Also, u have to be in condition to paddle & catch the waves. 2) Assuming u reach the lineup, u then have to contend with the crowd to catch a wave which is much more difficult than it looks because everyone wants to catch a wave. 3) Once u get comfortable with the paddling & catching wave part, u have to learn to manuveur the board. Believe me, u wo not have many chances to practice manuveuring during a session because u will be competing with the crowd to catch waves. 4) With surfing u will have to deal with conditions (wind, current, temperature, crowds, type of waves, & size). You will have to learn to deal with these variables. 5) The manuveuring part or ''surf moves'' that u think r easy really take a lot of practice to master if u want to do it right. Keep in mind that one wrong move means a u wipe out which then means that u lose the wave & have to go to the back of the line to get another chance, which then means that u have to fight the crowd to catch another wave. With snowboarding, u just pick yourself up & continue. 6) There is a fear factor to deal with since size of waves & conditions of the ocean r not always good. 7) Because u r not on land, u will have to learn water safety first & foremost before even entering the water. If u r not familiar, it will severely hinder ur learning curve as u muddle through the home of fishes.
Overall, the most difficult part of surfing (like most sports) is the beginning stage. l think the beginner remains a beginner longer in surfing that any sport because of the many variables to learn about the ocean as well as ur physical conditioning, & dealing with competitive crowds to get a chance to catch a wave. However, once u past the beginners stage, the progression for improvement is like any other sport in terms of being able to improve to ur optimum level.

Surfing is just like anything and everying. The more and more you do it, the better you would get. Everyday time you go out and surf you could could see yourself growing in surfing. But it might be dicouraging in the begining becuase you may not catch every wave that you go for. But as you keep surfing, you learn just slightest littlest tricks that may help.

well consdering l snowboard & surf l would say surfing is harder because, surfing u need alot of balance & u can never look down & u need to be very physically & mentally strong, & most people r scared of sharks drowning & hitting coral reefs & its hard to learn tricks in water when ur fighting the force of a wave that is probably strong than you. snowboarding is hard no doubt in my mind but not quite as hard because u need balance & good feet & u dont need to be as physically strong & yes ppl r scared of getting hurt but id have to say getting biten by a shark is not theyre fault gettinghurt in snowboarding is, & well u arent really fighting a force in snowboarding. only snow, & l think ur strong than that. =)

When the last time that your snowboard flipped over on you when you stood on or it, or you had to duck dive 10 moguls, or you had to paddle like hell to actually try to catch a hill. Snowboarding is infinitely easier, and yes l do both. Surfing only looks easy.

Have u EVER surfed? You ride on snow, it is not moving 20-40 mph. You ride down a hill, we ride a wave that is moving & pitching. When u fall, u fall on snow, oooowww, that is hard. Give me a break, I've fell on snow skiing. It is nothing compaired to being dragged across a coral reef when u fall from a wave. Can u drown from snowboarding? You've never been pounded by a 10 ft wave have you? Try it, l want to see u try to learn to surf. Like u said, it is easy.

To be honest, nothing but balance. All you need is good balance and a lack of fear of sharks and other ''dangers'' l dont consider sharks dangerous. Surfing tricks are a whole new story though, getting arials you need to be with your board and to have a complete understanding of the rest of the wave. Snowboarders have the board attached to their feet. The surfer must also have a good understanding of the water they're in. Hope this help. Happy holidays.

You obviously do not understand how waves work. There r no rails, no half pipes, no kickers, & no snowmakers in surfing. It is all nature throwing energy towards a reef, a point, a sandbar, etc. Because tides & winds change throughout the day, surfing at 6am is drastically different than surfing at 6pm. Conditions always change.
Tell me the last time a halfpipe changed within an hour enough that u could not ride all the way down to the bottom of the pipe. When was the last time u had to climb up the mountain to just start a run?
There r weeks when one wave is horrible one day where u can barely even ride the waves & everything is closed out, & then within 36 hours the same spot is pumpin, & everyone is trying to get barrelled.
A snowboard is attached to ur feet. Try getting air on a board without ur bindings. If there r billions of tricks while snowboarding, there must be trillions of tricks surfing.
Variations on turns, floaters, airs, grabs, shove-its, snaps, etc. All done without bindings. Just from an Alley-Oop, u can tweak the trick in so many ways. Flips, people r trying for Superman Grabs. l am sure that is not possible while snowboarding.
Again waves r different, enough that some boards work better on certain waves. It takes a different kind of person to ride a 10' Single-Fin Mal/ Longboard properly at Malibu. That same person may or may not be able to ride at Haleiwa, or Pipeline, or Mavericks, or Trestles. That same person may not know how to ride a Twin-fin well either. Point is, different surfers have different styles, & different boards work better with different people. Not that snowboarding does not have different boards, but u can not expect to punt airs while riding a Joel Tudor single-fin, nor can u hang-ten on a 5'10'' Thruster.
l could easily say ''in snowboarding all u do is ride a ski-lift & then go down the mountain hitting jumps & rails'' but there is more to it than just that. But the learning curve for snowboarding is much easier than surfing.
To even be able to read what a wave is going to do next takes years of practice. And then to think of what you're going to do on a wave as the wave changes takes even more experience. One wave may let u do dozens of turns & get barrelled. the next might let u just drop in & take the wave on ur head.
Hell l learned how to snowboard in a day, but l think it is only because l learned to surf decades before l snowboarding. l have friends who snowboard all the time, but can not catch a wave while trying to surf. Surfing takes a ton of patience. No ski-lift, not everyone can ride the same wave, & no bindings.
Try snowboarding without a ski lift/ helicopter, or ur bindings, then u can say that surfing is easier.
