You have strenght comparable to a bear, but only for endurance and short outbursts of paddling.....
You can stand up and stay up on Anything..far longer than anyone else- so, supernatural sense of balance....
Syncronise your speed to that of a moving wall of water etc....

But are any of these skills useful?

l think the most useful thing about surfing is the ability to leave the rest of your life on the beach and be in the moment. Sure fitness and balance contribute to your overall health which in turn improves your life overall, but knowing that at the end of the day, no matter how bad your day was, if you can go out and catch a wave it resets everything.

it gets the adrenaline going, (maybe not as much as sky diving, but its enough for me) not everybody feels that everyday. useful in that its a stress reliever and anger minimizer
too bad for the ''common land-walker'' that does not get the experience.

First of all it takes alot more then u think to surf especialy if ur dedicated.. if ur willing ot go out on days that the air is 20 degrees & teh waters 30 then that means ur in for life who cares if its usefull the feeling & life style u get out of surfing r amazing. just knowing that u r one of teh select few(a few as in a lot but not the majority) that can go out stnad up ona wave & do whatever the fuck u want witout any rules blows peoples minds. those bastards r sitting on the beach having life gurads & retards yelling at them u hav the ocean the only free place left.. do what u can wit it. enjoy it. make it yours

There are 2 kinds of surfers:1. The contest surfer and 2. The locals who do not see surfing as a sport but a way of life both spiritually and mentally.

A friend of my dads was the victim of a home invasion attack. The guy did not steal anything, he just beat the crap out of my dads friend & his wife. On a side note the story made national news, & he & his family have been on dr phil. Anyway, he among other things screwed up his shoulder really bad. The dr is were not sure if it would ever heal. But once he got his strength back some, he would just paddle out on his surf board in calmer waters. Eventually he got all his strength back, & within a few months it felt fine.

So if thats what u mean by useful yes. It can be very useful. If u mean like career wise, probably not unless u want to be a proffesional surfer. It is a good work out though.

l have yet to meet someone who would think of surfers or water folk as wankers, if someone tried to call me a wanker for surfing Id tell him he was the &%$** wanker and punch him in his face. l doubt that would ever happen considering l live in surf city USA.

Craig, any skill you possess which increases your physical stamina is a plus..most surfers are, coincidentally, very good athletes in general. So yes, surfing is useful (and very fun).

Surfing takes mad skills. Its not as easy as it looks. Surfing helps with other sports also such as skateboarding. Most people like to surf mainly for the thrill. Most people dont understand what it takes to surf. How many fat surfers are there?? maybe 3. Surfing is a mental game and teaches you patience.
